Isolation Activities

Good afternoon everyone!

Let's have a little chat about this whole staying at home business: some of you are not doing it. Some of you are 'key workers' therefore have to go to work but the rest of you who have no business to be outside, why? Covid19 is a serious issue and we have to all collectively take responsibility and stay inside where possible. You might be young. You might have a low risk but your nan and grandad do not. Staying inside is not about you, it's about the lives of those who are at high risk of contracting the virus and further not being able to actually heal from it. At this moment in time, we have to stop being selfish. We have to stop thinking about ourselves and our wellbeing and really follow the recommendations.

I want to preface this by saying that it is incredibly hard to be at home all the time. I cannot imagine how it must be for those of you who are extroverts. Humans are social animals and we need to see people and be around people for us to be happy and healthy. Right now, however, it is absolutely necessary for us to be controlled and careful. We have to put the needs of others before our own to ensure that the spread of the virus can be controlled.

Maybe, it makes me a slight optimist for taking this moment of a standstill as a way to catch up with myself. This moment has helped me refocus myself to what is actually important and what I actually want to do. The endless amount of hours tend to quickly run out but you can be present for all of them if you choose. Down below, I will list a number of productive and positive things you can do at home that will have a positive impact on your life. If you have a lot of time on your hands and have no idea how to fill them up, these recommendations might be helpful for you.

1) Learn something new. You can use websites like EdX, Coursera and even YouTube to learn about something new. Websites like EdX and Coursera can provide you with a certificate. You can also use Skillshare and learn a new skill that can help you further your career or add something to your CV.

2) Exercise. You have absolutely no excuses to not exercise. Sure, your home is not a gym with all the relevant equipment but you can be resourceful. There are so many equipment-free workouts available on YouTube. You can also try Pilates or yoga or basically whatever takes your fancy.

3) Write a story. This is really self-explanatory. You can use a prompt or just your own idea to create a story. This can help you escape from this monotonous time. You can use your imagination and be creative and use what you have to entertain yourself.

4) Read a book. Again, this is self-explanatory. You are probably already putting reading off so this is the perfect opportunity to get back into it. You have no excuse again so just pick up a book that has been collecting dust and read!

5) Fix your sleeping pattern. During this time, you can use the fact of not have timed commitments to fix your sleeping. Use different kinds of alarms and have a night routine to help you wake up earlier or later and sleep the appropriate hours to make sure you are being healthy.

6) Meditate. Meditation is so important. Like the other things, we often overlook meditation and say there are other priorities we need to complete but isn't our mental health incredibly important too? Meditation is very helpful. In England, we are allowed to take a walk outside for a daily exercise so you can use this time to take time for yourself in stillness. It only helps you with other things.

7) Start a blog. Do you know something that you want to share with the world? Are you creative? Do you have an opinion that you want to explore and share? Do you like research? If yes: start a blog.

8) Try painting or drawing or doodling something. Drawing like everything else is a skill that needs practice but you might get far with it if you did a small piece of drawing every day. I have also heard that drawing and painting can be incredibly therapeutic.

9) Try different makeup looks. This is the perfect time to take out all your eyeshadow palettes and try something new. You might be scared of doing something creative on your face so use this time to try new looks and use colours you would never usually use to see what you like and what you don't.

10) Learn to cook. During this time, you have to be very creative with food. The shops near my house is incredibly scarce with food products. This is a good opportunity to try new recipes and try new foods that you wouldn't usually go near.

11) Try gardening. Is your garden a mess? Time for some cleaning. Put some plants in if you can and clear the surface from all the clutter and make it look nice. It will be some valuable time to be outside in the sun amongst the greenery and flower if you have any.

12) Declutter your house. I used this opportunity of peace and quiet to take apart all my LPC notes and place them in files and folders. I organised my books and undergraduate notes too. This helps everything look tidy. As they say: a tidy room is a tidy mind. Declutter your entire house and make sure that everything inside the house has purpose or importance.

13) Use Discord, House Party or Skype to connect with friends and family. Keep in touch with people. Play games together or watch a film together. It's not the same as a physical connection but we have to be resourceful.

Those were just some ideas! Be positive and be happy. This will all pass soon and you will be able to enjoy the sun and the summer. Right now, we have to responsible and do everything in our power to not contribute to the spread of the virus. I am sending all of you a virtual hug because these times are very hard times but we will get through it. I will see you in my next post!

Sincerely Sinthu

Why You Should Vote

Afternoon, everyone! Let's talk about the general election. It's just a week away and there are so many reasons why we should vote. The parties are all making so many promises and proposals for new policies. We need to get out there and decide what we want for the future. Regardless of whether you support one party or another party, just get out there and vote and make sure your voice is heard. Voting impacts how things are in your community and your life.  So why vote? Sure, you might say that you'll have no influence and no impact on the outcome. You might even be completely disinterested in politics and the news but not voting will mean that other people will decide how your entire world is run. From Brexit to education, from the environment to the NHS, it will be decided by someone else. Voting is deciding what policies should proceed and policies make real-life changes. Your vote will impact a whole plethora of different and important aspects of your life so...

SMART Goal Setting

Afternoon, everyone! So let's talk about goal setting. Who has set up a bunch of new years' resolution? Who has failed at keeping to it? I think it's safe to say most of us use the new year to improve ourselves in some way but often times it just doesn't work. I was taught a wonderful method of creating goals in therapy that has really helped with achieving my goals. According to the Chartered Management Institute , the technique was introduced by Peter Druker and G.T. Doran and has been praised for its effectiveness. So what is it? The SMART follows the form of an acrostic poem in which each letter of the word 'SMART' spells out a word that you should keep in mind when creating a goal. S pecific: when creating a goal, you have to very specific on exactly what you are seeking to achieve. Let's use running a marathon for example. Simply writing 'run a marathon' is not going to help you visualise exactly what you are seeking to do. It doesn...

How To Answer a Problem Question

Afternoon, everyone! Happy New Year everyone! So exams are around the corner so let's get back to basics. This is for my law students whose exams contain problem questions.  Let's go over how to answer a problem question. This post will be incredibly general so be wary of what is expected of you from your relevant module or criteria to make sure you pick up all the marks. 1) Read your question and highlight all the key variables. Usually, the last paragraph will give you an idea of what the examiner is expecting you to answer. Make a big mental note of this to make sure you are not putting down way more than you need to. Having this in your head will help you tailor your answer better. The key question is what does your client actually want to know? 2) When writing, introduce what the client wants advice on so that the examiner knows that you have understood exactly what the question is asking you to do. A simple one to two lines will be sufficient. 3) Is there a part...
